T1/2 Sanofi-aventis U.S.' New iPhone Application: GoMeals
by Dana Lewis and Kelly Close
It’s no secret that diabetes devices have made substantial gains over the years
– we've evolved from fumbling with blood glucose meters that are bigger than a brick
to using meters and pumps the size of a BlackBerry. But you know it’s the age of
technology when we've also developed the ability to electronically count carbs,
stay on top of our "meal plans," and track what we eat.
Cue "GoMeals," sanofi-aventis U.S.' new "app" for the iPhone (or iPod Touch). The diaTribe
team had the chance to check out GoMeals, which adds the food you eat to a virtual
plate to count calories and approximate percentages of your daily totals of carbs,
protein, and fats. Yes, carbs – some valuable electronic help is here at last! And
boy did we find it to be most excellent help and something that made our lives both
easier and more fun.
Sanofi-aventis U.S. and GoMeals Offer an Easy Carb-Counting App for Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetics

Carb counting has always been a weakness in my diabetes management. Eating well demands knowing how much to eat from each food group to manage your weight. For someone with diabetes, knowing how to balance different foods is about weight control, but knowing your carb count is the key to successfully managing your blood glucose levels. Every day on Twitter, under #bgnow, you can see how many of us are waffling with this. If you own a continuous glucose monitor, it's another eye-opening experience to see the amount of guessing that happens with carb management and insulin requirements.
In April, I was introduced to a program that sanofi-aventis U.S. sponsored with CalorieKing called GoMeals. It is an iPhone and iPad application that allows you to calculate calories, carbs, fats and more in a daily log. The program is free to download and the features connect to CalorieKing, making it easier to add foods from some of my favorite hangouts, like Starbucks.

GoMeals:
If you travel a lot for business and or socially like I do, this is a must! It provides a direct link to restaurants wherever you are. You can call to place an order at the touch of the screen. Go Meals can plan your daily meals while tracking your daily nutritional intake. This application is great for people with health issues to keep up with calorie count, sodium, carbohydrates and fats. It is also great for finding nutrition guides on your favorite foods in the store and in the restaurant. Go Meals helps you prepare for your meals in advance whether you’re at home or on the go. How nice is that?
